In a minute, I will give you the best Charles Atlas exercises, but I have a confession to make. You see as a young 12 year old boy I had a paper route. While reading one of those comic books I stumbled upon a small ad in the back for a Charles atlas dynamic tension exercise course. I wasn't a 97 pound weakling, I don't remember even weighing that much.

You see my freshman year in high school I weighed 102 pounds! The only reason I remember that is because that was the weight I wrestled at in my freshman year.

But back to the story and let me fill you in on what are the best Charles Atlas exercises.

That entire summer I saved every single penny from my paper route and I sent away for the Charles atlas course. As you can imagine, I eagerly awaited its arrival. Each day I would check my mailbox to see if it had arrived.

I will always remember the day it arrived. I tore the envelope opened and pulled out my very first lesson. Visions of huge muscles and no longer being picked on raced through my head. I started that very moment training.

For those of you that are not familiar with Charles atlas, he designed an exercise program that used a combination of isometrics and bodyweight exercises. He also had some interesting twists to the exercises. For example, instead of just doing push ups on the floor, you would perform some of the pushups on three chairs.

By doing it this way it allowed me to go deeper in the exercise, this caused my chest muscles to respond very quickly. Well, you can imagine how happy I was.

My newfound strength and increasing muscle size allowed me to perform very well in gym class.

It's been years now since I used the Charles atlas course and while it has its place in history I've long since realized its limitations. Bodyweight exercises can only go so far in building size and strength. To build a strong and muscular body, you must use progressive resistance.

In other words, the limitations of the Charles atlas exercises, as in all bodyweight only exercise programs is that there is no ability to add additional resistance.

You can increase its effectiveness by using, isometric exercise equipment, resistance bands, weight vest or another person's bodyweight. Using these simple tips you will be able to perform more effective Charles atlas exercises.

I recently had a chance to catch up with one of my favorite fitness colleagues at a womens' fitness conference in South Florida. We got into a conversation about the 2 ways women try to get sexy thin thighs...

The Hard Way actually was a long list of the many wrong and self-destructive ways of 'attempting' to get nice thin thighs, ranging from unrealistic heavy weights and uncomfortable machine type exercise programs to bogus 'spa' treatments (like body wraps) to 'slimming pills' to crazy 'diets' to ridiculous 'cleansing' juice fasts to 'miracle' thigh lotions and creams...

Of course, there was a whole lot more than that, but you get the idea of our candid conversation - that eventually came to the subject of The Easy Way to get attractively thin thighs.

This, of course, first assumes that a woman has flabby, fat, thick and heavy thighs - that she is unhappy, maybe even depressed with and wants to slim them down and firm them up.

Both of us wholeheartedly agreed that the easiest way for a woman to get sexy thin thighs is by:

Rule One - following a properly structured, and targeted exercise routine, that focuses on the problem areas (in this case - the fat thighs).

Rule Two - combining that program with the right type and amount of cardiovascular exercise for calorie burning.

Rule Three - following a healthy, simple, and 'calorically correct' eating plan with foods that are readily available at any modern supermarket and taste good!

Rule Four - [Most Important] Committing to a lifestyle of 'fitness' habits that naturally result in a woman having 'those eye catching thighs' and a body to match, for the rest of her fun life.

Please make note that 'thin thighs' is a relative term - and most often can be replaced by 'thinner thighs' - because let's face it - 'too thin' is not sexy or desirable either.

Which takes us back to my philosophy on fitness and life:

"It's all about balance. Proper balance, that is." In other words - you can balance the wrongs things and that won't bring you the results you want. You must balance the right elements for to get the desired outcome.

My fitness colleague and dear friend, Victoria, agrees about finding balance in your fitness journey - as she will be the first to admit that her life used to be way out of balance until she decided it was time to change her body and her life for the better.

Atlas Shrugged has an extremely black-and-white quality; either you are an embodiment of highest virtues or you are unredeemably evil. There is no middle ground. All the characters in this book are as if they had come from some sort of a Baroque opera. No doubt, Atlas Shrugged would have benefited, if it had had a better editor.

Like Albert Einstein the physicist (and the philosopher), Ayn Rand has an absolute belief in the law of causality. One could not help but wonder what her views on quantum mechanics and Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle were.

Notwithstanding these flaws, the book makes many a good point:

- Reason is the main epistemological tool of acquiring knowledge about reality. Thinking and rational mind are what separate us most clearly from other animals. - Do not apologize for your virtues. - Altruism, when forced upon by the State, is a grave sin. - Mankind makes quantum leaps forward by brilliant and free individual minds. - In its core, capitalism is a system of individualism, thus inherently capable of making quantum leaps forward (in science, innovation, etc). - Communism, or any collectivism for that matter, cannot work, not even in theory. Enforced socialism is to be opposed. (Ayn Rand's views on socialism and capitalism were probably influenced by Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich A. Hayek).

I find it rather fitting that exactly 50 years after Atlas Shrugged was published (1957), the Nobel Prize in economics (2007) was awarded to Leonid Hurwicz, Eric Maskin, and Roger Myerson for their work on mechanism design, which deals with the problem of arranging "our economics interactions so that, when everyone behaves in a self-interested matter, the results is something we all like." Since the 18th century, we know (thanks to Adam Smith and Adam Ferguson) that the pursuit of self-interest is not a zero-sum game.

The book is worth the reading effort. It will induce you to think about the nature of humanity, the perils of far-left egalitarianism, and what the struggle for happiness is all about (needless to say, Ayn Rand was no closet Aristotelian).

Does Atlas Plan to Shrug?

It must be almost 50 years since I last read Ayn Rand's classic, libertarian, "objectivist" novel, Atlas Shrugged, the central theme of which is reflected in the title. Published in 1957, it was her final and longest fictional work, what she determined her masterpiece.

Atlas in Greek mythology was condemned by Zeus to bear the weight of the heavens, or universe, on his shoulders for his insolence to the gods. (A very brief, lighthearted, list of Atlas' infraction and punishment can be found on my website.)

While I have never fully subscribed to libertarianism and less so to Rand's philosophy of "Objectivism," I've all the time admired her thesis in Atlas that the world is dependent on the intelligent, capable do-ers, the makers and shakers who built and maintain the world in contradistinction to the takers and moochers of the world, oblivious to the truth that should the makers disappear the takers' world would collapse.

While the Greek Cypriot Republic of Cyprus alone became a member of the European Union on May 1st, 2004, any person who holds a Cyprus passport is now entitled to full European citizen status.
